Editing, interaction, image and text. That is graphic design today.
Graphic designers speak with image and text. The form and content of that graphic conversation is investigated deeply in the Editorial Design studio, in relation to an audience. In Interactive Design, the social aspect of this graphic conversation is key: between users and designers, authors and producers, and their tools.
Image and text are the building blocks of graphic design. Visual expertise in image and text forms the core of a practice as a graphic designer and is built in both the Image Design and the Typography studio. In the Academy we value Drawing as a contemporary tool for learning, and a basis for graphic talent.
Graphic design today is a container for many disciplines — layout, system design, publication, illustration, animation, installation, film, photography, book typography, font design, etc. — in which various design tools and production methods are manipulated — from graphic software, drawing tools, cameras and computers, to contemporary press, print, cut, bind, screen and projection technology.
We provide our students with a broad insight into these disciplines, design tools and production methods, and see the bigger picture. Through design assignments, form exercises, drawing studies, workshops, projects and presentations, and lectures about graphic production and techniques, we sharpen the creativity and insights of our students. In doing so, we guide them towards their own language of design.
As an art practice, graphic design is at the centre of society. Our students learn to analyse and address questions, and to position themselves through knowledge of art, philosophy, media and research. They learn to explore form to organise and communicate their ideas. Professional experience is gained in projects and internships with partners.
Hard work, critical analysis, formal experimentation, conceptual design, intense collaboration, timely production and lucid presentation. That is how we prepare our students to become the graphic designers of tomorrow. In editing, interaction, image and text.
